GCSE'S & Life after the holiday

Life has been a bit hectic since the holiday, Bailey started his online GCSE'S with Sheffield College as soon as we got home. This is the first time he has done anything like this before so its all a bit nerve wracking and new. The English GCSE actually started two days into our holiday and the maths GCSE a week later so he was starting off on the back foot really. I hate being late at things but I think the holiday was just as educational and much needed.

Bailey has made a great start, despite hardly doing any formal maths or English since he left school in 2007. I think he has actually surprised himself how much he is enjoying it and that he is getting such positive feedback from his tutors. He has scored over 90% on his last 3 weekly maths tests-and that included algebra! He had to attend a full college day a couple of weeks ago to take part in some listening and speaking tasks and to write up his first assignment, we are still waiting to hear his assignment score but he got a B+ for his presentation, speaking and listening tasks which is brilliant. I think its given him a real confidence boost to what he can do when he puts his mind to things and I have to admit to feeling quite relieved that we're not having to find exam centres! I managed to get talking to another one of the mums whose home educated daughter was also doing both online GCSE's when Bailey did his college day, it was so nice to chat to someone going through a similar experience as I have found it quite a lonely process. There are so many different ways into GCSE's and just as many different opinions on it all that it has been a little frustrating and confusing so I'm really happy that so far its all going very well.

Since the holiday the younger three have been playing lots of Lego, Playmobil and Minecraft on the Xbox. We have been enjoying our Tuesday night Great British Bake Off on BBC2 which has inspired Cordelia to do lots more baking. She has found a recipe for the most delicious cookies, the dough tastes just like the dough in Ben & Jerrys cookie dough ice cream. If I could get near it I think I'd put some in the freezer....

Ruben has been doing some reading aloud, its amazing how many words he knows without being prompted! The girls and Bailey have been catching up with the rest of the books in the Skullduggery Pleasant series, they have been ordering them from the library. They are all beginning to think about Halloween and costumes and we've been planning some activities.
